Job Description

We are seeking an operationally minded, results-oriented Executive Director of Finance with extensive experience in the defense contracting space. This role will lead the financial strategy, direct and oversee financial activities, provide strategic direction to enhance financial performance, and collaborate with the executive team to optimize company performance. The successful candidate will work closely with department heads to ensure optimized profitability through various financial strategies. The Executive Director of Finance will be skilled at anticipating market trends and effectively segmenting market demand to drive appropriate pricing and maximum profitability.

Essential Position Functions

Strategic Planning

  • Develop aggressive financial strategies to enhance profitability and support ambitious growth plans.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising growth potential.
  • Research revenue opportunities, analyze economic trends, and assess internal operations to identify areas for cost reduction and process improvement.
  • Analyze financial performance, key metrics, and trends to provide actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Manage capital allocation and financing strategies to optimize capital structure and liquidity.
  • Lead long-term financial planning to ensure scalability and sustainability.
  • Provide data-driven insights to support executive decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and leadership team on growth initiatives and capital investments.

Leadership

  • Assess operations to identify areas requiring reorganization, additional human capital, downsizing, or elimination.
  • Act as the organization’s subject matter expert on financial compliance matters, including DCAA and FAR compliance.
  • Build and lead a high-performing finance team to support organizational growth and strategic objectives.
  • Establish best-in-class financial discipline and scalable financial systems.

Cash Management, Liquidity, and Yield Management

  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure sufficient liquidity to support operational and strategic needs.
  • Optimize working capital through effective management of receivables, payables, and inventory.
  • Develop and implement cash management strategies to maximize fund utilization and minimize financial risks.
  • Track key financial metrics, including days sales outstanding (DSO), days payable outstanding (DPO), and days inventory outstanding (DIO), to improve cash flow efficiency.
  • Monitor and forecast cash flow to proactively address funding requirements and investment opportunities.
  • Implement yield management techniques to optimize returns on cash reserves and short-term investments.
  • Establish policies and controls to enhance treasury functions, ensuring compliance and financial stability.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to align cash management strategies with business objectives.
  • Participate in pivotal costing decisions related to large projects.

Financial Integrity

  • Supervise audit activities and ensure compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and timely filing of all local, state, and federal taxes.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, long-term financial planning, and forecasting activities.
  • Make or oversee necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets.
  • Work with the management team to efficiently develop proposal budgets, provide access to project finance information, and manage contract compliance and reporting.

Minimum Position Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance required; MBA or Master’s in Finance preferred. CPA credentials are a plus.
  • Experience: 10+ years of finance management experience, including 5+ years in government defense contracting.
  • Skills: Leadership, Organizational Management, Financial Expertise, Detail-Oriented, Strong Verbal and Written Communication, Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.

Reporting Structure

The Executive Director of Finance will report directly to the CFO.

FLSA Status

This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
