Senior Operations Manager – Machine Tool Manufacturing

Position Summary:

Are you a seasoned operations leader with deep technical expertise in machine tool manufacturing and a passion for driving precision, performance, and progress? We are seeking a Senior Manager of Operations to lead all aspects of production and operations for a highly specialized industrial environment focused on the design, assembly, service, rebuilds, and retrofits of advanced machine tools.

This role is pivotal in ensuring world-class operational efficiency, product quality, and on-time delivery. The ideal candidate will bring robust leadership experience, lean manufacturing expertise, and a hands-on understanding of complex mechanical systems. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, supply chain, and quality teams to foster continuous improvement, digital innovation, and scalable operations aligned with Industry 4.0 principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Leadership: Direct and oversee the full manufacturing lifecycle, from production planning to final delivery, ensuring optimal coordination across production, logistics, maintenance, and warehouse functions.
  • Machine Tool Expertise: Apply in-depth knowledge of machine tool design, assembly, testing, and servicing to guide operations strategy and execution with a strong technical foundation.
  • KPI Management: Monitor and improve key production metrics including OEE, scrap rate, cycle times, and labor productivity, ensuring alignment with business targets and customer expectations.
  • Lean & Continuous Improvement: Champion the implementation of Lean Manufacturing methodologies to eliminate waste, increase efficiency, and improve throughput across all departments.
  • Product Industrialization: Collaborate closely with Engineering and R&D teams on the industrialization of new and custom machine tools, ensuring manufacturability and operational scalability.
  • Cost Control & Budgeting: Develop and manage the operations budget, analyze manufacturing costs, and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality or delivery.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure operations comply with applicable quality standards, safety protocols, and industry regulations, fostering a culture of operational excellence and risk mitigation.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing operations team, promoting a results-driven, collaborative culture with a focus on accountability and continuous learning.
  • Digital Transformation: Drive adoption of Industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing technologies, including ERP enhancements and shop floor digitalization initiatives.
  • Supplier & Partner Engagement: Interface with strategic suppliers and service partners to ensure alignment on delivery schedules, quality expectations, and innovation partnerships.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Management Engineering (or equivalent technical discipline).
  • 8–10+ years of progressive leadership experience in operations management within the manufacturing industry, with a strong preference for machine tools or complex mechanical equipment.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes including precision machining, mechanical assembly, system testing, and lifecycle service.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement frameworks.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (preferably SAP) and manufacturing data systems; experience with digital factory tools is a strong plus.
  • Strong leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills with a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent communication and team-building abilities; fluent in English (spoken and written).
  • Must be U.S. Born or Naturalized Citizen

Preferred Skills:

  • Military Veteran or Military Spouse experience highly valued.
  • Background in high-mix, low-volume production environments and custom machine builds is advantageous.
  • Large machine manufacturing experience a big plus.

Location & Compensation:

  • Rockford, IL
  • Pay: $125-180K
